Trump announces ceasefire, two-week pause in Iran war; Tehran confirms deal
Donald Trump announces two-week ceasefire in Iran conflict after talks with Pakistan; Tehran confirms deal, raising hopes for peace.
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant development, Donald Trump has announced a two-week pause in proposed military actions against Iran, signaling a temporary ceasefire amid escalating tensions. The decision reportedly came after discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir.
According to Trump, the ceasefire will be conditional on Iran agreeing to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz fully, immediately, and safely. He stated via social media that Pakistan had urged a halt to hostilities, which the US accepted under specific conditions.
Trump further claimed that the US has achieved most of its military objectives and that meaningful progress has been made toward a long-term peace agreement. He also revealed that a 10-point proposal has been received from Iran, which could serve as a practical basis for further negotiations.
Reports suggest that US officials have emphasized that the ceasefire will only take effect once the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has also confirmed the two-week ceasefire arrangement, describing it as a “victory” and stating that further peace talks will be held in Islamabad.
Media reports also indicate that Israel has agreed to the ceasefire, raising hopes of de-escalation in the region.
It is noteworthy that Trump had earlier warned Iran of severe consequences, including potential strikes on power plants, bridges, and key infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed. However, the latest developments have offered a glimmer of hope for reduced tensions and a possible path toward lasting peace.
